Baker Street in Gorleston reopening after sinkhole emerged

Baker Street in Gorleston has been shut to traffic since a section of the road collapsed last Wednesday (July 4).

It is the second time in the last few months a sinkhole has appeared, prompting frustrations from a business owner that it wasn't fixed the first time.

Mark Eales, co-owner of Pedal Revolution, said: "It has caused absolute carnage with people driving down the road then having to do a three-point turn to go back.

"It has been shut since Saturday morning but there was no warning prior.

"If they had done the job the first time it wouldn't have happened again in just a few months."

In April, a lorry got stuck in a hole two to three metres deep and required repairs.

It reopened on Wednesday (July 12) following emergency repairs to a pipe under the road by Anglian Water engineers.

A spokeswoman for the water company said: “We are sorry for any traffic disruption on Baker Street in Gorleston.

"We have needed to install traffic lights to enable us to repair a pipe.

"Our teams on-site will be working to complete the job and reopen the road by the end of play tomorrow. We are grateful to customers and road users for their patience while we carry out this essential work.”

Mr Eales fears that if the issue is not fixed for good, it could cause more extreme problems for his business.

He added: "Since the problem drain goes under the shop, it makes me wonder if one day I will turn up to find the whole shop has collapsed into the road. It is a little worrying."
