A woman was horrified to find debris including plastic wiring from a firework display strewn all over a Norfolk beach. 

Nic Clifford, 49, was walking along the strand at North Denes in Great Yarmouth on Sunday morning (October 29) when she and a friend found the litter which included small cardboard tubes and plastic wiring.

"My friend and I had a bag each but there was so much of the stuff we could not pick it all up," she said.

"We were surprised because so much of the innards of the fireworks are made of heavy duty plastic."

On Saturday night (October 28), Haven Seashore Park in North Denes organised a firework display.

Although it cannot be confirmed where the debris originated from, a spokesperson for Haven said: “Every year, Haven Seashore Park puts on a firework display for its guests.

"This year, as we have done previously, we worked with Great Yarmouth Borough Council and our firework provider to ensure a full and thorough clean-up operation was carried out the day after the event.” ­

Ms Clifford, who volunteers with the marine conservation charity, the Captain Paul Watson Foundation UK, said it "seemed ironic" later that day watching the new Planet Earth documentary which was about plastic in the oceans.

"And just for human entertainment, for a few bangs and flashes, a few oohs and aahs - and this is what we're doing," she said.

"We chuck litter in the air and think it's going to disappear in the ether. No, it comes down again."

A spokesperson for the borough council said: ‘’The council has received no reports about debris from fireworks displays.

"However, our rangers team will be carrying out checks on Great Yarmouth beach and will make arrangements for any cleansing that is required.’’
