A bid to chop down a tree that is 'loved by its community' has been refused after objections from more than 30 villagers. 

The application was seeking the felling of a grey alder tree on land at The Cobbleways in Winterton.

The applicant submitted a structural survey which suggested external crack damage to their home had been caused by subsidence due to clay shrinkage exacerbated by the tree, which is on land in front of their house.

But a planning officer at Great Yarmouth Borough Council said the survey did not contain sufficient evidence that the cause of "the very slight damage" was due to the tree.

There were 33 objections to the proposal from residents who praised the tree's visual appearance, public benefits and environmental and wildlife benefits. 

Winterton Parish Council also objected and said: "We can't see the point of removing a perfectly healthy tree that is clearly loved by its community and adds huge value to the local environment."

The planning officer also said that the applicant had not carried out sufficient investigation into alternative tree management.
