A woman whose son died after a car crash has said a half-marathon organised in his memory helped her cope with her grief.

Amanda Leathers, from Lingwood, was speaking about the Dan Leathers Charity Run which took place in early December, one year to the day after the 20-year-old died in hospital following a two-car crash on the A47.

The half-marathon was organised by friends and family and raised more than £17,000 for East Anglian Air Ambulance. 

Ms Leathers said: "It was just amazing to see how many people cared so much for Dan.

"He deserves to be remembered like this. He was the sort of person who always made sure everyone was okay. He was so loved."

She said the family were thankful for the support from the community. 

"It helps you get through what we're going through," she said.

One of the people who organised the 13-mile race was family friend Sarah Forder, who said: "The support we had from the community - from friends and family - was just unreal.

"They joined us, they cheered us on.

"It was a very special day, one I will never forget," she added.

Ms Forder is now hoping to turn the race - which took in the villages of Buckenham, Beighton, Lingwood, Strumpshaw, Brundall and Blofield - into an annual event.

There are plans for a marathon to take place next year in September around Mr Leathers' birthday.

Two days before he died, Mr Leathers had been travelling home from work and turning across the road onto the Yarmouth Road at Blofield, when a Range Rover crashed into the side of his Vauxhall Corsa.

In October, an inquest into his death heard that he may have survived had the other motorist been driving to the speed limit.
