Further travel disruption is expected throughout the weekend as a new £121m bridge stays closed.  

The recently opened Herring Bridge was closed to general traffic on Wednesday after a "minor technical fault" caused it to become stuck. 

Council bosses said the bridge would reopen following a short delay but now they are saying it will stay shut over the weekend and into the next week to allow engineers to investigate the cause of the failure.

A spokesman added: "Some teething troubles are to be expected on a project of this complexity which is why we have an extended operation and maintenance contract in place with the main contractors to ensure any such issues are completely ironed out before the bridge is fully handed over to the council."

River traffic will still be able to pass underneath but fencing has been installed on both road entrances to stop people from driving across.

It is the second time the bridge has broken since its opening on February 1 which saw workers swearing following a barrier issue.
