A bid for housing in a seaside village has been refused over concerns about creating an 'awkward relationship' between neighbours.

Graham Doggett was seeking permission from Great Yarmouth Borough Council to build two houses on land south of Garfield Villa in Garfield Terrace, on Yarmouth Road in Caister.

The site is an area of fenced-off land which is overgrown with scrub and surrounded by houses.

According to the plans, access to the new houses would have cut through what is now the parking and driveway area to a neighbouring house on Garfield Terrace.

It was this aspect of the proposal which concerned planners, who said it would create "an awkward relationship between the two houses".

Another problem was the potential for "noise and disruption" to the occupants of that same house. 

The application had faced seven objections.

Caister Parish Council raised concerns about overdevelopment of the site, while neighbours flagged the potential for noise and disturbance from additional traffic, overlooking between houses, and flooding from increased surface run-off water. 

Since 1990, the council has considered 14 planning applications for the site. 

Nine of the proposals were refused, most recently in January 2023 after Mr Doggett had applied to build a detached four-bedroom house there.
