Great Yarmouth Town will aim to avoid another bump in the road as they try to keep their promotion challenge on track.

The Bloaters sit third ahead of their trip to struggling Team Bury tomorrow, having lost just three Thurlow Nunn League First Division matches. Those defeats came against sides they were expected to beat and joint-boss Martyn ‘Sinny’ Sinclair admits Yarmouth need to start producing the goods regularly – not just when they take on their main rivals.

“Football’s a funny game. We went to Halstead and won there comfortably. We beat Ely, who we thought were an excellent side, 5-2 at home but then we’ve lost to Debenham, Cornard and Sudbury who are nearer the bottom of the table,” said Sinclair, who runs the team alongside Adam Mason.

“They had that little bit more than us on the day which we’ve got to make sure doesn’t happen. The league table is starting to map out and we’re in and around it. We expect one or two teams that are a bit further down the table to put a run together to compete. And the top six or seven teams will already feel they have a chance of going up.”

Yarmouth, who suffered final-day heartbreak last season by losing a do-or-die encounter with Saffron Walden Town to grab the third and final promotion slot, moved within two points of second-placed Ely at the weekend by thumping Braintree Town Reserves 5-1. Robin Andersen (2), Leighton Crux, Mitch Forbes and Declan McAvoy found the net.

“It’s been a decent start. I’m not going to say it’s been wonderful but I’m pleased,” added Sinclair.

“We’ve got limited resources and a young squad that’s coming together well. They are learning pretty quickly and it’s nice we’re in and amongst the top clubs. Hopefully that’s where we’ll be come April because that’s when it matters so we won’t be getting carried away.”

The Bloaters were meant to play on Tuesday but they suffered more fixture frustration as their match at Wroxham once again fell foul of the wet weather. The Norfolk Senior Cup fourth-round clash is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, with a back-up at The Wellesley in place for the next evening should it be postponed once more.

Premier Division Gorleston welcome Haverhill Rovers tomorrow before they try, again, to host Fakenham in their Senior Cup showdown on Tuesday evening.
